The South African National Elections of 2024 marked a pivotal moment in the rainbow nation’s rich democratic history.
Lebone Litho was proud to have played a crucial role in ensuring the success of this monumental event. The importance of these elections cannot be overstated, as they were instrumental in shaping a new era of South African politics.
The Election Process
The 2024 elections were a considerable undertaking, with the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) managing the logistics again.
The voting process was conducted relatively smoothly across the country, although a digital bug did slow down voting at some stations. The IEC teams rose to the occasion and went above and beyond on the day.
Over 26 million South Africans were registered to vote and approximately 70% stepped up to vote, reflecting the public’s engagement and commitment to democratic governance.
Election Results
The election results saw a nail-biting finish for the leading party, with a results declaration being made on the 2nd of June by the IEC.
The ANC achieved a 40.18% outcome, which is a significant loss of its enduring majority. Next was the DA, with a 21.81% outcome, followed by Zuma’s MKP with a 14.58% result.
This lack of majority led the ANC to make an announcement on the 6th of June wherein they invited all interested parties to join in a government of national unity (GNU).
The GNU Impact
GNU is a familiar political language for South Africans. Since the 1994 constitution and its 1996 replacement, the country has been led by a legally-mandated GNU. With the government ministries shared among various parties, there is a risk of contradiction and undermining moves, but it is also an opportunity for enormous political growth that will benefit our wonderful rainbow nation. We will all watch with hope and interest.
